Children's Health Fund's Referral Management Initiative
We are the sole supporter of The Children's Health Fund's Referral Management Initiative. This program ensures continuity of care for medically underserved, high-risk children, who are often homeless.
This system eliminates the barriers, distance, cost, and cultural issues that often prevent these children from receiving the services of specialists. Lessons learned from this initiative will have an impact on programs that provide healthcare to underserved populations.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation GSK Hope for Families Fund

GlaxoSmithKline provided a gift of $1 million, matched by The Children's Hospital Foundation to help young people living with difficult-to-cure cancers. Named the GlaxoSmithKline Hope for Families Fund, it will provide a permanent endowment to help children and young adults with relapsed cancers gain access to innovative new therapies at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The Fund will provide assistance to patients from low-income families, ensuring that travel costs and living expenses are covered while care is being received at CHOP. Families who benefit from the Fund are selected by an independent committee at CHOP, based on individual circumstances.
Fund for Philadelphia
The Ambulatory Health Services Breast Health Outreach and Counseling project identifies uninsured women who are in need of breast cancer screenings. For these women, direct mail outreach and telephone counseling has proven to be successful. The program overcomes language barriers, provides breast health education and mammograms, and provides referrals for follow-up care.
North Carolina Prevention Partners
Childhood obesity is a major health concern in the US. GSK supported a three-year project to develop and test toolkits that address this issue through materials developed for use in elementary, middle, and high schools. The project to-date has impacted over 76,000 students, and 24 school district teams have been trained.
We currently are supporting expansion of the program through a distance-learning component, which includes web-based training.
Pittsburgh Mercy Foundation
GSK supports Operation Safety Net, which is a healthcare outreach program for the homeless population. Men and women living on the streets are given access to healthcare designed to meet their unique needs. The program began in the Pittsburgh area and has expanded to a 19-partner Street Medicine International program in the US, Europe, Asia, and Central and South America.

Program evaluations have demonstrated that participants report reduced visits to the hospital and improved perceived health, among other positive outcomes.
The Wellness Community
GSK supports the Patient Active Guide to Living with Advanced Breast Cancer which is a national program consisting of community seminars, support groups, online support, and other resources for those living with advanced disease.
